Expensive, trendy, junk
Funny how people will give these thing high reviews and they've only had it for a couple of weeks.

At 6 months, the telescoping handle has broken. (duct tape repair)
The handle assembly has become very loose.
The mechanism that takes it from a canister to a upright malfunctions half the time. (someone else who gave this thing 4 stars said the same thing) Wait another few weeks and the rest of it will start breaking.

For $300 you can buy a MUCH better vac.
Luckily, I got mine a home Depot for $99 on clearance. They had a whole bundle of them for that price and yes they were new. Wonder why the low price? Now I know!

Great Vacuum
I have purchased 4 upright vacuum cleaners in the last 10 years. 3 were bagless. They have mostly ranged from $200-$350.00. 2 were Kenmores, One a Dirt Devil and one a cordless Westinghouse. None of them have done a sufficent job in my home due to my Shiba Inu which sheds periodically. Considering I have spent more on other vacuums and didn't receive any satisfaction, I decided to buy this one at its now reduced price, mainly because most of the reviews(pro and amateur)never actually mentioned a lack of cleaning power as a con. They were generally more superficial conveniences cons like how the cord wraps or the weight.

Furthermore, I would never pay $600 for a vacuum. I paid $169. With all of the negative reviews out there it was a gamble. I will admit that after using this vac once my wife was amazed at how clean I had gotten the floors, Usually after using my other vacs the brush is tangled with dog hair, primarily pushing a growing mound of hairball across the carpet, but never cleaning it. Not the Z.
I was assuming also that this thing would operate like a tank since everyone complained of its heft, I guess these reviewers were 120 lbs or so because I didn't see any more reason to complain about the weight than if you had a Kirby. That's what I used as a kid. Maybe in this day of 9 pound Orecks its a big difference but never was it cumbersome.

Seriously, if your concern is actually cleaning, this vac is excellent.l If you paid $600 and expected more, really, what were you expecting? Its a domestic work appliance. Auto cord rewinds don't impress me, I want a clean carpet. This is the first vac that I have bought that has actually done what was promised and if it clogs, which is common in all vacs, it provides an access point to clear the clog. The dirt cup is pretty small so you will have to empty it more often than others.

All in all though a nice gamble paid off for me. I'm really wondering what some of the other reviewers were expecting.

waste of money
I have had this vacuum for over a year and have had it back for repairs three times and needs to go again. Have had the auto door for the wand that change's vacuum flow stick and the motor that drives the filter burnt out. I was told that carpet fresh is bad for this vacuum. If that's bad for it then dirt must be a killer. The screws have worked loose that hold the thing together. The power cord is behind the attachment cover and down low so you have to hold the cord or step on it. The wand adjustment won't stay locked, so as you pull back, the wand get longer and you have to stop and deal with that problem. Does not have a dirt sensor and does not clean along the edge of the wall. This is the fifth Hoover that I have owned. The others were WindTunnels self-propelled bags type and excellent machines. This machine is dirty to empty and the filter does plug up.

I'm a sucker for a good deal--but skeptical
I was browsing Home Depot one day and saw the Z700 stacked in a middle aisle. I was impressed by the high-tech look but it seemed awfully heavy for a bagless vacuum cleaner. I couldn't beat the price for $99 and needed a vac for stairs because I noticed the long stretchable hose. Forget the vacuum-powered stairway brush - none of them work. They all stall out. It is effective for the price though. Like I said, I only use it for stairs. It's too heavy to lug anywhere else. I feel sorry for whoever paid over $400 for their's. The suction isn't that great but it does have neat "bells and whistles". BTW, I also have a Kenmore and self-propelled Hoover that are much better. (The Kenmore is the best!)

Consider a Dyson instead
This is more of a scientific review on all the latest, and greatest features about Hoover that aren't the latest, and probably the most ignorant designs that Hoover has done.

Hoover was the first company to create a vacuum cleaner in 1907 (or 1908). Back then, because Hoover was new, they gave their best of what they got. And since the Hoover Z 700/400 was introduced, I think Hoover is now lazier then ever with their vacuum cleaners. If you've been researching for a new vacuum cleaner, I bet you will find that most Hoover vacuum cleaners on several websites are either 1-star or 3-star overall rating. Hoover went from the latest and greatest, to 1-star vacuums.

I can be persuaded easily by advertisements and scams. I know that because I fell for this $500 machine when it JUST came out. Now it's about $250. I bought my Hoover Z 700 on my birthday as a gift, because I thought it was really neat looking. I'm very picky though, so the smallest things will make me unhappy that I purchased the item. The first thing that I did when I got this, I felt it's suction. It was strong, but when I put on the power-hand tool it spun, but once you touched it, it stopped. Also, I started to vacuum with the floor tool and after walking about 7 feet from the vacuum in its canister position, and nothing was being sucked up. I bore with it by shortening its hose, and only the crumbs would be sucked up. Nothing else. I then started to vacuum a large rug that is a low-pile, and it stopped vacuuming because it said that the brush-roll couldn't spin. And that's because of one of the case-sensitive features on this vacuum is that some carpets and rugs force the agitator on the vacuum itself to slow it down. And when this happens, the vacuum realizes this, and stops itself as if there was a jam in the vacuum. I tried adjusting to medium pile, but that's too high where no dirt can be picked up.
Oh, this is my FAVORITE PART!!!!! I will go into much greater detail about this feature later in my review. I thought I liked the fact that the filter cleans itself, but that's a huge lie. It doesn't.

One more thing: The Hoover Z 700 & 400 are both WindTunnels. Why else would they not want you to remove the brush grid to clean your vacuum's agitator? Don't believe me? Look for yourself. Even the Salesman at my local Hoover store told me so too.

Ok, now it's time to talk about why you shouldn't consider some of the new Hoover vacuums that may come out.

The "self-cleaning HEPA filter" does not clean itself. Put yourself in the shoes of dust. If there is constant suction surrounding the whole filter that is directly above the dirt cup, and a paperclip-spring flicks off dust, what will happen? Dust may fall off about 2 cm away from the filter, but REMEMBER, there is still constant suction surrounding the whole chamber of the filter, that means: the dust that falls off from the filter gets sucked back to the filter. It you're lucky, some if it may fall off. However, if you reach that point in time where the filter is so dirt and clogged where there is no suction, then more dust will come off, but that means your vacuum is clogged and has lost suction power. In conclusion, there is NO point in having a filter that cleans itself.

Now about the lack of suction when you FIRST get the vacuum: the reason that that powered-hand tool and the other reason that the Hoover just cannot pick up heavy objects anymore is because of that filter. Now that the paperclip spring object is constantly irritating the filter, the filter has to be stronger than ever to withstand that abuse. So the filter has fewer holes in it to allow air through, or whatever the reason is that the filter is stronger than ever.

This is what I have to say about Hoover, and these specific details also go with the Hoover WindTunel 2 vacuum cleaners.

It's time to face reality folks. If you spend about 150 dollars every 1-3 years to buy a new vacuum to last, then you need to spend quite a bit more to get a vacuum that can last about 20+ years, because you otherwise waste $3,000 on vacuum cleaners for 20 years. I currently own a Dyson DC17, and it is the best vacuum I have ever owned. It is specifically made for American floors and carpets, and it has the best cyclone technology. I hate Bissell, Hoover and other companies that try to imitate the technology because Dyson was the first company to create cyclone technology, and they will always be the best.

I recommend to you and everyone else who is looking for a new vacuum that is really a kick-*** machine to get a Dyson. These machines have amazing suction power, and will pick up things that you've never seen before. Don't let those people who sell several brands of vacuum cleaners in the stores get you down.
If you have to have a Hoover for some reason, then I would consider any Hoover WindTunnel that's bagged (Except for the WindTunnel 2 bagged because it blows dirt also on the outside part of the bag). They deliver stronger suction than the WindTunnel 2s and all of the nick and crannies have been adjusted to make it perfect

I have been researching, experiencing, and living with about 20 vacuum cleaners now for 10 years, so please don't judge me and assume that I don't know what I'm talking about. I am trying to help you save your money on something that you would by (at least) directing you away from this vacuum cleaner.
